Star interviews:

Persistence and patience are the traits of a successful technician. The glamour world is a mix of sweet dreams and nightmares. Here is one cinematographer, Siva kumar alias Siva from Chennai, who chose not to dream at all, but to make a non-stop pursuit of the concrete goal – to become a director. A Gold-medalist from Adayar Film Institute and son of a popular documentary photographer Jayakumar, he started his career in Tollywood … a small worker in the cinematography department for Venky’s film Jayam Manadera. In a brief journey of 5 years, he did the DOP (Director of Photography) for about 15 films, all over the South. Now, Siva waits for the victorious moment in his life as the “debut director” of Gopichand’s film Souryam, set for release on September 25th. In an exclusive interview to Idlebrain, Siva tells about his smooth but happening journey in Tollywood.

Tell us about your journey into Tollywood?

My name is Sivakumar and I am widely called as cameraman Siva. I come from Chennai. I pursued career in photography. In 1998, I took my gold medal from the Adayar Film Institute. I worked with Jayram Vincent (popular cinematographer) and as operative cameraman with some other technicians before coming into Tollywood. It so happened that I came to Hyderabad to work for Venkatesh Babu’s film Jayam Manadera (2000) as operative cameraman. From 2002, I became an active technician and I worked as Cinematographer for about 15 films. They include Nenunnanu and Boss of Nagarjuna; Sriram, Gowtham SSC; Charlie Chaplin and Badri in Tamil. Mine is a slow but careful journey. I never faltered anywhere.

Before coming to the photography field, I cherished a lot of interest in fine arts, particularly writing poetry, small plays. I got the Best Orator Award thrice in Tamilnadu. I used to write a lot of things during the nights and observe my surroundings for new things each day. This helped me when I wanted to become a director. Though I took up cinematography as profession, always I was gripped by the ambition to become a director. But due to professional commitments and other technical reasons, it got delayed for all these years.

Last year, I took it stubborn that I should become a director. I just took complete rest from my profession and readied five scripts. I picked up one script and went to Hero Gopichand and narrated it to him. You know what happened? He immediately shook his hands with me. He never asked a single question. But gave me the answer: Yes. Siva, we are doing the film. It is my next film. Go, get ready. (That time, he was engaged to Ontari). First I took it lightly. But, I found that Gopichand really liked my subject and believed me like his brother. I had no time to waste. Things went down fast and we successfully completed the film Souryam.

How confident are you with Souryam?

Confidence flows all over my body. First of all, it is the trust that matters a lot. I trusted myself, I trusted the script, I trusted the people, and I trusted the cast and crew. After preparing the script, I narrated it to more than 100 people in the age group of 10-25 and even beyond that up to 50 and 60. I met the audience from all walks of life, but not connected to the film industry. They were rikshaw-pullers, autowallahs, software people and the like. Not to bluff, almost all of them liked the script. It injected the vile of courage into me. That’s it.

Into which category or genre does Souryam fit into?
It is a pucca mass entertainer and will justify the image of Gopichand. The story has powerful commercial shades, hilarious comedy. I reiterate that so far Gopichand has not done such a role in his career. Souryam is all about hilarious comedy, mind-blowing stunts, and moving sentiments

How do you justify a powerful title like Souryam?

Yes. The movie will just arrest the audience and make them sit from the start to finish. Souryam means courage. Not ordinary courage. There are two kinds of wars. 1) Internal war with the self & 2) External war with enemies. When a person wants to a wage a war against both these aspects simultaneously, he needs a mountain of courage. That is what we call Souryam. My script will provide one hundred percent justice to the title.

Your experiences as debut director with mass hero Gopichand?

He simply believed me. From the day one when I narrated the subject till the completion of the shoot and even today, Gopichand looks confident at the same level. You can see that in each and every frame.

Is there any modification to the script after you narrated the subject to the hero?
Not even a single modification at any level. However, a lot of comedy scenes were created and incorporated suitably.

Tell us about the power of comedy in Souryam?

Yes. From the start to finish, the audience will definitely be entertained with hilarious comedy. This department is not a separate track. It is run with Gopichand, Ali and Anushka. I can’t stop appreciating Anushka for her great performance. I really wondered at her and the way how she handled the comedy thread. The power of comedy can only be felt in the theatres and it can’t be explained. Raghubabu told me the movie is going to become a super hit.

Why you repeated Anushka for Gopichand (after Lakshyam)?
Yes. It is a grand repetition. Audience who watched Lakshyam found Anushka and Gopichand a perfect screen pair. Yes. On the screen, they are made for each other. Going by my subject, such chemistry is very much required between the hero and heroine. So, there is no other go for us, but to fix Anushka. I am lucky and thankful to her. Her performance is tremendous. Beyond my words to express. Just, she did complete justice to my idea of the heroine. If Anushka is not there, certainly would have been at a big loss.

What about the music?

We got good response to the audio. RR is going to be the highlight of the film. Mani Sharma garu saw the scenes and told me: “Siva, you wait and see what I will do?” He scored terrific music all through. He did not out of commercial attitude alone. But, he got himself involved with the film. He owned it. Having seen the film bit by bit, this composer of grandeur emphatically said that Souryam is going to be a blockbuster.

What is the main highlight of the film?

Human emotions. See, there are lavish episodes followed by painful episodes. But, you find perfect balance between them. A truly purgatory experience!

Tell us about the stunts?

They are powerful and well suit the title Souryam. For instance, you have a terrific stunt sequence at the climax. It was completely shot in dust and gales. Gopichand, indeed, took great risk, though we asked not to do so. His efforts will never go waste.

What about villains?

Manoj K. Jayan and Ajay did the prime villainy. The former is popular both in Malayalam and Tamil film industries. You know how powerful Ajay can be as a villain. But, I assure the audience that it is not ordinary kind of villainy. The audience will thoroughly enjoy the villains and their performance. How, I can’t say. It has to be watched. This is a secret.

Where did you shoot Souryam? Tell us about the locations?

We shot the film in about 85 different locations. You find each and every scene fresh like morning sun. Three areas are there. Kolkota (the film has this backdrop); Hyderabad (talkie, songs and general sequences) and Switzerland (songs).

What about your producer?

I shall be grateful to my producer Anand Prasad garu for my entire life. He is my first producer. So far, he never interfered into our work. He never asked me a single question and he never doubted me. Certainly, he is a rare person with great heart. He never behaved like a producer, but as the brother of the film unit.

What kind of films you watch? Which influenced a lot?

I watch all kinds of films. I kept it a rule that I should watch one movie every day. The films – Samarasimha Reddy, Narasimha Naidu, Adi and Indra – have a very strong impact on me. I saw Ramgopal Varma’s Shiva for about 60 times. I also like the film Swathi Mutyam of K. Vishwanath garu.

Do you have plans to make direction and cinematography simultaneously?

Yes. I like it. But technically, it’s not possible. Supposing we want to shoot a massive train episode, that time I have to control the public crowds. I can’t do cinematography. My knowledge of the camera is a big plus point to me. I can see from the cameraman’s angle also.

What’s your preference now? Cinematographer or director?

Director. And director only, because it’s my long cherished dream realized now.

Next plans?

Waiting for the Souryam result. I am tense but I see success before me. And I have four more powerful scripts. Let me see. I am not in a hurry.

Anything else?

I am a big fan of Idlebrain.com. My hearty Dasara greetings to all the viewers. Thank you.

Star interviews :

Gopichand's journey in Tollywood in not all bed of roses. Making his debut as hero with Toli Valapu (2001), he tasted bitter failure. Without any inhibitions, he switched over to villainy. His histrionics were so powerful that he bagged Nandi Award (Best villain) for Jayam; and held the audience in wonder with his ruthless wickedness in Varsham. Though he got an opportunity to work as hero again during the time of Jayam making, he honestly waited till he achieved stardom. When he made his second coming as hero with Yagnam, he received wide applause and his success streak as hero continued, irrespective of the destiny of his films. His latest film Souryam is all set to hit the marquee tomorrow. Gopichand, beaming with confidence, says that still he is not a perfect artiste. "I hope to compete with ace comedians like Brahmanandam, besides learning the art of fine romance onscreen." An exclusive interview to Idlebrain. Excerpts:

How did Souryam materialize?
Cameraman Vasu told me that Siva is having a good story. I asked him to tell Siva to come and meet me. He did not come. I was discussing with D Suresh Babu and he told me that he heard a potential story from Siva who is looking to direct a film. D Suresh Babu sent Siva to me and he gave me 2 and half hours of narration. I agreed to do it immediately.

What did you like in Souryam?
There is not even a single boring moment in the film. Entire film is entertaining with the right mix of commercial elements. There is lot of clarity in director while narrating the film. Siva executed the film very well.

Why repeat Anushka?
The first reason is that ours became a hit combination with Lakshyam film. The second reason is that the character suits her very well. There is a very good prominence for heroine role in this film and it is an important role.

Jayam, Varsham, Yagnam, Ranam, Lakshyam, Souryam – why two lettered titles ending with zero?
More than the sentiment, I feel that souryam is apt for the story line of the film.

What is the reason for doing it for a new producer?
I had known producer Anand Prasad for the past five years. He was willing to produce a film with me as hero when Jayam was released. I asked him to wait as I did not have the market. He has lots of confidence in me. I felt that this is the right time for him to produce a film with me as I have created a market for myself as hero. As per my judgment, Souryam is a safe film.

What went wrong with your earlier film Ontari?
Killing heroine after raping her did not go well with the sensibilities of Telugu audiences. The masses could not understand the spaced out flashback format. The main point of the film is about hero taking revenge on the people who killed his love. I told director BV Ramana that he would get the entire credit for hit/flop as it is a very risky subject to execute and then convince the audiences.

What went right with Lakshyam and how much did it collect?
Lakshyam collected a share of 18 crores, as per my knowledge. The combination of me and Jagapati Babu as brothers worked. The heroine and songs are pluses. The climax is a major asset.

You have created a market for yourself where your minimum guarantee film would rake in around 10 crores. What is the proposed budget for your films?
I don't believe in having a fixed budget for my films based on my market. I think the producer should spend the money as per the demand of the story.

Don't you think director Siva being a Tamil guy might not do justice to a Telugu film?
He has been in Telugu film industry for the past 7-8 years. He knows the sensibilities of Telugu people very well. He is a pucca commercial director. He is very good at extracting emotions.

You worked for over 10 films so far. Do you think you lack anything as an actor?
I feel that I should learn more about performing comedy. I should be able to compete with comedians like Brahmanandam in their combination scenes. I should also be able to do romantic scenes more convincingly.

You seem to be more concentrating on doing mass films. Why don't you do different subjects on small budget?
The dynamics of trade in film industry is different compared to other businesses. Our heroes market is valued at what our previous film has collected. The moment I do a small budget film, the buyers for the next big budget film would hesitate to pay more quoting about the money collected for a small budget film. I have done Okkadunnadu film. Though it is a good film, it did not work at B and C centers where all my mass films do well irrespective of how good they are.

I hear very good subjects. But these subjects cannot be done at this point of time. If the number of multiplexes increases in AP and then I might do such small budgeted films.

What is your next project?
I have not committed any film yet.

MOVIE REVIES :TOLLYWOOD LATEST FILCK

ASTA CHEMMA:

Jeevi rating: 3.25/5

Comedy

Art Beat Capital Ltd

Cast: Colors Swati, Nani, Srinivas Avasarala, Bhargavi, Jhansi, Tanikella Bharani, Hema etc

Music :Kalyani Malik
Cinematography: PG Vinda
Lyrics: Sirivennela
Producer: Ram Mohan
Stoy - dialogues - Screenplay – direction: Mohana Krishna Indraganti
Release date
: 5 September 2008

STORY :

Lavanya (Colors Swati) is a hardcore fan of hero Mahesh Babu. And her ambition is to marry hero Mahesh. But her heart is broken when Mahesh married Namrata Sirodkar. She lowers her expectations and decided to marry somebody who has ‘Mahesh’ in his name. Anand (Srinivas Avasarala) is a lanky neighbor of Lavanya and he is bugged with ‘Pokiri’ songs played in loud volume by Lavanya. He decides that the only way to get rid of noise from her house is to hook her up with a good looking boy with the name Mahesh. And he finds a handsome guy called Mahesh (Nani). The rest of the story is all about the comedy of errors originated due to the Mahesh obsession of Lavanya.

Artists Performance :

Srinivas Avasarala: A real actor is the one who adds more to the table than what it is with his performance. Srinivas Avasarala is a born actor and he added 25% to the output of the film with his performance. Be it dialogue delivery, comedy timing, minute expressions or body language. He should seriously consider packing his bags and finding the next available flight to Hyderabad as Telugu film industry is desperately looking for such fine actors. He is a complete delight to watch. Srinivas Avasarala is selected for this film through a talent hunt conducted by Mohana Krishna Indraganti in idlebrain.com.

Colors Swathi: Her character in this film as an obsessed fan of Mahesh Babu is like a natural extension to her hilarious portrayal of girl in love with Venky in AMAV. She is completely natural and is herself while doing the role of Lavanya. She brought out lot of mischief and child-like stupidity that is needed for the character which her histrionics. But fans of Swathi will get little disappointed in the second half because her footage is relatively less compared to the first half.

Nani: Nani has sharp features, nice Telugu diction and amazing confidence levels. Doing a role that requires the attributes of Mahesh Babu is a challenge for a newcomer. And Nani comes up with a fabulous performance. He has a promising future if he selects the roles carefully.

Others: Bhargavi is good as the traditional village girl. Jhansi has done a variety role that reminds us of the harmless and witty mother-in-law character in ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’. Tanikella Bharani and Hema are adequate. The guy who played the server character in ‘Amrutam’ TV serial is fun to watch in this film.

Story – screenplay – direction: Story of the film is simple, yet complicated. This story is based on a play written by Oscar Wilde. Most of the film revolves around name confusion. A film like this needs an interesting screenplay to sustain the attention of he viewers. Mohan Krishna Indraganti succeeds in giving us a film that sustains the interest levels throughout by injecting the necessary twists at the right time. Direction of the film is good. The narrative style using which he introduced characters is brilliant. The director is supposed to take the comedy in the film to the next level during the last half-an-hour of the film where pieces fall into the place. Though the twists were well-placed in the last half an hour, the director could not get more laughs towards the climax.

Other departments: Music by Kalyani Malik is nice. The visuals and situations in the film add more to the music. Dialogues written in the film are witty and most of the time impromptu (except for the last half an hour where the dialogues are lengthy). Cinematography by PG Vinda is nice. The vintage song should have been done in black and white. Editing is nice. The product looks superior in terms of visuals and sound. Producer Ram Mohan should be commended for keeping faith on the director and on this genre.

Analysis: First half of the film is really good. The narration is little slow in the second half. The climax is interesting, but a better handled one would have added lot of the value to the film. The plus points of the film are casting and comedy quotient. The director and the producer’s decision for choosing a particular genre and sticking to it without diluting with formula commercial ingredients deserve applause. Probably Ashta Chemma is the first Telugu film where the entire story revolves around a real film hero. And it shows the kind of craze Mahesh Babu has in the hearts of people (especially girls). On a whole, Ashta Chemma makes a good viewing for multiplexes and A center crowds.

TOLLY WOOD NEW TODAY :

NTR in Chintakayala Ravi
For the first time in his career, NTR has given a special appearance for a film. He danced his trademark steps in a
song of Chintakayala Ravi along with Venkatesh, Anushka and Nikita. He features in half of that song. It was Nallamalupu Bujji who co-produced Aadi film which became the first massive mass hit in the career of NTR. As per the sources of idlebrain.com, NTR did special appearance in this film without taking any remuneration as a gesture of friendship. Chintakayala Ravi is all set to release worldwide on 1 October.

Rajasekhar attacks Chiru verbally
Film star turned politician Rajasekhar is having a whale of time on TV channels attacking Chiranjeevi and his capabilities as a politician. Accompanied by his better half Jeevitha, Raja Sekhar categorically stated that he would rate the capability of Chiranjeevi as zero in politics. He also stated that Chiranjeevi might get 10 or 20 seats and his party would be rapped up by the time of next elections. Referring to the politicians who are joining in Chiranjeevi's party from the other parties, Raja Sekhar gave an example of a Tamil saying which means that the politicians joining Chiranjeevi party are like wives going to king after being dissatisfied by their husbands. He said that all of them would suffer. "Chiranjeevi enjoyed all luxuries in film industry. When he says that he drew inspiration from Mother Theresa, Jyothi Rao Pule, and Ambedkar, these people were in fact not connected to politics. It shows that Chiranjeevi's entry into politics is basically mooted out of selfishness. When he has failed to serve the film fraternity, what service would he be doing to the public?" he questioned.

Posani warns Chiru's critics
Director and actor Posani Krishna Murali reacted sharply to the criticism against PRP President Chiranjeevi. He said that those who questioned the authenticity of Chiranjeevi entering politics were in fact not influential people. "Who are these people? I suggest them not to make unnecessary comments against Chiranjeevi. If they continue to mud-slinging, then we will come into direct picture. And once we start talking about them (critics of Chiru), we will almost torture them and kill them with our words," Posani maintained.

Nitin, Bhavana in Malaysia
Nitin and Bhavana are currently engaged to the songs schedule in Malaysia, which commenced on September 13th to continue till 22 for the film titled Hero. Produced by Manyam Ramesh, it is directed by GV Sudhakar Naidu alias GV, screen villain. Simultaneously, the dubbing work is in progress in Hyderabad. The producer said that the film would be ready for release as Vijayadasami gift to the audience, while the audio is planned to release in the last week of this month.

I don't want image: Jagapati Babu
Jagapati Babu said that he doesn't want any image attached to him. Talking to the media in Hyderabad, he said that he was one and the only hero in the industry who could do any role without image-consciousness. "It depends on my sheer judgment what kind of characters I should do. Even in RGV's film Raksha, I am not the hero, but just one of the characters. I will continue follow this trend," he said.

Pirated CDs of Ashta Chemma seized
Pirated Cds of latest films Ashta Chemma, APF and Salute were seized in bulk stock in Vizag on their clandestine arrival from Chennai. Vizag Task force police nabbed on Srinu in this connection and he said that he would procure each Cd at Rs. 9 in Chennai and supply to the shops at Rs. 16 each. The seized bulk of about 3,000 Cds also included films like Hareram, Ullasanga Utsahanga, Baladoor and Gorintaku, besides Bollywood and Hollywood films. Only the big-hero films hit or flop, were subjected to piracy and the small films remained safe from this illegal business all these days. But, the trend has changed and the small films became easy targets of piracy.

Tarakaratna turns early bird
When the TDP is trying to bring all the Nandamuri heroes onto one platform to fight the coming elections, Nandamuri Taraka Ratna took early lead and participated in the Simha Garjana sabha organized by the fans on Monday in Kurnool. A huge rally was taken through the arterial roads of the town with about 10,000 crowds. When Taraka Ratna began to speak, there was huge commotion and the fans barged over to the stage. When the police resorted to larthi-charge twice, the hero also got hurt slightly. Later, addressing the gathering, Taraka Ratna denounced the rumors that he had differences with NTR. When asked about Balakrishna's decision about contesting the elections, he said: "It is for Babai to decide."

CHINTAKAYALA RAVI :MUSIC LAUNCH

MUSICof Chintakayala Ravi, a Venkatesh starrer with Vishal-Sekhar duo as MUSIC directors, was released this evening at Ramanaidu Studios, Hyderabad. The film made on Lakshmi Narasimha Productions is produced by Nallamalupu Bujji under the direction of RGV’s protégé Yogie. Aditya Music is marketing its audio.

The dignitaries of the evening included Venkatesh (hero), Anushka and Mamta Mohandass (heroines), Yogie, Nallamalupu Bujji, Vishal-Sekhar duo, Seenu Vytla, Kona Venkat, Brahmanandam, Sunil, Chalapati Rao, Raghubabu, Chandrabose, Naga Ashok Kumar, Gemini Kiran, D. Suresh Babu, Sravanti Ravi Kishore, Kodali Nani, Rajitha, Ganesh, Srinivasa Reddy and others.

NTR released the audio cassette and presented the first number to Asian Films representative Narayandas. It was Brahmanandam who unveiled theaudio CD, presenting it to Seenu Vytla. Three songs were screened to the gathering in bits.

Four steps towards success: Kona Venkat
Kona Venkat spoke in detail about the making of Chintakayala Ravi. “The subject of Chintakayala Ravi was conceived by accident. When Yogie narrated the subject, Venkatesh felt that the subject was very apt to his body language. That was our first success. Next, we roped in Vishal-Sekhar duo for music with its perfect mix of class and mass touches. This is the story of a Telugu guy in a new land like the US. We need new composers for this film. Though the Vishal-Sekhar duo doesn’t know Telugu, they understood the situations with dexterity. That’s why the music has come out extraordinarily. It is our second success. Yogie’s direction is another highlight. I know Yogie when he was working with Ram Gopal Varma as co-director. He treated this romantic comedy entertainer with utmost care. Last but not the least; Suresh Babu is in fact the backbone of this project. He is one person in Tollywood who holds the eleventh dimension, which will be completely new in its perception. This is our greatest success. Nallamalupu Bujji left no stone unturned to provide the best production values. New York city will come alive on the screen.”

Humbleness made Bujji big: NTR
NTR said: “Post the making of Student No. 1, a gaudy looking person came to me and introduced to me as Chitra Sai Bujji, producer. He brought another person called VV Vinayak. He was even more rugged than the producer. After several days, I had to respond to them by force. I never believed them first. But, they gave me an all time hit Aadi, the success of which I don’t need to say again. Though Aadi brought grand name and fame to Vinay and me, Bujji was left out. But, he was given all support by Suresh Babu garu and Venkatesh and the result was Lakshmi. Now, this Chintakayala Ravi. It placed Bujji among the top producers in Tollywood. The music by Vishal-Sekhar is simply superb. They are wonderful. The Sunita Sunita song is rocking. I hope this film will become a super duper hit.”

Best family entertainer in my career: Venky
Venkatesh said: “I thank the entire cast and crew of Chintakayala Ravi for their collective efforts. My special thanks to Vishal-Sekhar. We enjoyed the shoot in US very much. I am confident that Chintakayala Ravi is going to be the best romantic family entertainer with a lot of comedy in my career.”

We fell to Hyderbadi hospitality: Vishal-Sekhar
Vishal & Sekhar said: “We are thrilled with the hospitality of the Hyderabadi people. More than the professional relationship, we extremely liked their friendliness. We were received with lot of respect and admiration. Our journey with Chintakayala Ravi is wonderful. We are thankful to Venkatesh garu.”

Brahmanandam said: “Bujji (producer) is like an eagle on a sharp lookout for wonderful scripts (prey). This subject Chintakayala Ravi is perfectly suitable for Venkatesh.”

Sunil said: “I play the role as Pendurthi Babu. Failing to get even the deposit in ZPTC elections, I am dejected, but after a beautiful girl like Mamta Mohandas. This film is going to be a big hit.”

Mamta Mohandas said: “I am happy to be associated with top hero Venkatesh. Yogie is a wonderful person with sharp eye for family entertainers. I wish the team of Chintakayala Ravi all the best.”

Anushka said: “The songs are simply superb with great music by Vishal-Sekhar. You have excellent choreography of songs as well.”

All the speakers wished the unit of Chintakayala Ravi best of luck. The film is set for release on October 1.
